Principal’s Communication: 2020-2021 School Year

Dear St. Thomas the Apostle School Families,
I truly hope that everyone is doing well and staying healthy. These unprecedented times have proven to be a big challenge and have affected our norm as we know it. I thank you for your patience and understanding in us communicating what the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year would look for our school. I did not want to be preemptive in sharing a plan that would then have to be retracted because of the ever changing reality we are facing.
Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom mandated that all schools within counties on the state’s watch list would not be allowed to resume in-person instruction this coming Fall. As our school is located in Los Angeles County and on this list, we are legally mandated to follow the Governor’s directives. Our Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Mr. Paul Escala also shares the sentiments of Governor Newsom; you can read his statement to our school communities below. Therefore, and until further notice, we will be on distance learning for the 2020-2021 school year.
Letter from Superintendent: COVID-19 Update to Schools 07/16/20
I understand that this decision comes with varying emotions and opinions, but trust that at the forefront is the wellbeing of all our students, faculty, and staff. Now knowing the certainty of how we will begin our new school year, in the coming days you will receive a detailed plan for our improved Distance Learning Academy. Please trust that this new plan will consider and reflect the feedback I have been receiving from our families, students, and teachers. It will reflect detailed schedules for increased hours of live virtual instruction, improved parent communication/support, tutorial workshops for both students and parents on how to navigate our platforms, and new rigorous hybrid curriculum in all of our academic subjects.
In light of all that is happening around us, I ask that we all play our part in helping return to our school as soon as possible. Please wear your masks, maintain a strict hygiene routine, and avoid unnecessary interactions and gatherings with large groups of people. Above all, please be truthful and accountable in your exposure to the virus. Have your family, children included, tested as needed. This is what will help our school community come together again sooner than later.
Amidst all of this, we will continue to grow spiritually and in our faith. We will foster the sense of community and family that is unique to our school, even if at distance. You are all in my continued prayers.

Comunicado del Director: Año Escolar 2020-2021

Queridas Familias de la Escuela Santo Tomás el Apóstol,
Sinceramente deseo que todos se encuentren bien y llenos de salud. Estos tiempos sin precedentes nos han retado como nunca antes, y ha cambiado la norma a la que nos habíamos acostumbrado. Les agradezco mucho su paciencia y compresión en nuestro comunicado referente al comienzo del nuevo año escolar. Mi intención era no tener que retractarme después de haber compartido un plan de regreso a clase, ya que la realidad que nos rodea constantemente cambia.
Ayer, el Gobernador Gavin Newsom efectuó un mandato que impide el regreso a instrucción tradicional a cualquier escuela que se encuentre en un condado en la lista con altos casos del virus. Ya que nuestra escuela se encuentra en el condado de Los Ángeles, uno con el número más altos de casos en el estado, nos vemos forzados a ejercer los directivos del Gobernador. Nuestro Superintendente de Escuelas Católicas, el Sr. Paul Escala comparte los sentimientos del Gobernador, pueden ver su mensaje a nuestras comunidades escolares en su carta adjunta. Por este motivo, y hasta nuevo aviso, estaremos en aprendizaje a distancia para el año escolar 2020-2021.
COVID-19 Update to Schools 07/16/20
Entiendo que esta decisión llega con emociones y opiniones variadas, pero ante todo está el bienestar de nuestros estudiantes, facultad y personal de la escuela. Sabiendo por seguro como comenzaremos el año escolar, en los días siguientes recibirán un plan detallando, y mejorado para nuestra Academia de Aprendizaje a Distancia. Confíen que este plan reflejará y tomará en cuenta los comentarios y sugerencias que he recibido por parte de nuestras familias, estudiantes y maestros. Verán un incremento y una programación detallada de instrucción virtual, mejoramiento de comunicación y apoyo a ustedes los padres de familia, talleres de cómo navegar las plataformas digitales, y nuevos currículos híbridos con un rigor académico apropiado en todas las materias.
Por otra parte, y ante la realidad que nos afronta, les pido que todos demos de nuestra parte para que pronto estemos de regreso físicamente en nuestra escuela. Por favor usen sus cubrebocas, mantengan una rutina estricta de higiene y eviten interacciones innecesarias o lugares de alta aglomeración. Sobre todo, sean sinceros y responsables sobre su nivel de exposición al virus. Háganse las pruebas necesarias para saber su estatus. Esto es lo que ayudará a que nuestra comunidad escolar regrese a estar juntos lo más pronto posible.
Ante todo esto, continuaremos a crecer espiritualmente y desarrollar nuestra fe. Trabajaremos para fomentar el sentido de comunidad y familia que caracteriza a nuestra escuela, sin importar la distancia. Todos seguirán en mis continuas oraciones.
