Hello Parents,
Today within our Catholic tradition, we honor St. Joseph, patron of the Universal Church, patron of parents/guardians, and considered the model of the pious believer. Let us all emulate the faith that St. Joseph lived out by remaining faithful, trusting that as educators and parents we will do right by our students, and will grow and succeed in the new St. Thomas the Apostle School: Distance Learning Academy.
I know we all have many questions and uncertainties at this time. I hope to address some of those issues and help you navigate through all the information you are receiving from the school and even the media that surrounds us. Please know that we are here to support you and your students as best we can.
School Closure:
- Despite the announcement that Governor Newsom made regarding schools remaining closed for the rest of the school year, neither the Department of Catholic Schools nor LAUSD have given official notice of this.
- St. Thomas the Apostle School until further notice will be closed through March 31st. If this were to change, I will notify our families immediately.
Communication with the School:
Per the Distance Learning Academy Handbook, we ask families to refrain from calling the school office. No one is on campus to receive those calls. Email is the best method of communication.

Tuition:
We fully understand the circumstances, but please also understand that as we transition from campus-based to distance-learning, school staff continues to work daily to ensure our students are receiving the best instruction possible. Each of our schools continue to operate on our own budgets, as we are not currently receiving any financial support from the Department of Catholic Schools. Our families, through tuition and fees support the continued ministry of our school. As a result, tuition will continue to be applied during this period.
Please contact Mr. Cuevas with any business related concerns. We are here to help and support!
Distance-Learning:
It is imperative that as parents you take the time to become familiar with the platforms that have been set-up by our faculty. Our efforts will only be effective with your help in ensuring that your students are completing their works.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind:
- Please communicate directly with teachers for any academic success questions and/or about the logistics of their platforms.
- Every teacher has a different schedule and set-up for their distance-learning platforms.
- Middle School: We already have late assignments and missing work. Also, low attendance in the live Zoom conferences. Please make sure you are verifying that your students are fulfilling their responsibilities.
- Attendance is taken by teachers.
- Teachers will share with you their policies on late work. We are aware of the circumstances, but please communicate with your child’s teacher if there is a special family circumstance for why assignments and coursework cannot be submitted on time.
Moving Forward:
- As of writing this letter, we have not received a definite update on how long our school closure will truly be. As soon as that information becomes available, I will share with our school community. This will also come with our long-term plan for distance-learning.
I will continue to be in constant communication with all of our school community. Please trust that we have the best interest of our students’ academic success as a priority. We also keep in mind what this situation brings to your households and family life. We will navigate through this challenging time together and come out a stronger St. Thomas the Apostle School.
Please remain in prayer and strong in faith. For any reason, please reach out for support and guidance, or to have any worry or concern addressed.

Hola Padres de Familia,
Hoy, dentro de nuestra fe Católica, honramos a San José, el santo patrono de la iglesia Universal y padres/guardianes, que fue considerado un ejemplo de un devoto creyente. Hay que emular la fe que vivió San José, permaneciendo fiel y confiar que como educadores y padres, haremos lo correcto para que nuestros estudiantes tengan éxito en la nueva Academia de Aprendizaje a Distancia.
Sé que muchos de ustedes tienen preguntas e incertidumbres. Espero abordar algunos de esas cuestiones y ayudarlos navegar toda la información que están recibiendo de parte de la escuela y a través de los medios de comunicación.
CIERRE DE LA ESCUELA
- A pesar del anuncio que hizo el Gobernador Newsom sobre las escuelas cerrando hasta el final del año escolar, ni el Departamento de Escuelas Católicas ni LAUSD nos ha comunicado esto oficialmente.
- La escuela Santo Tomás estará cerrada hasta el 31 de marzo. Si esto cambia, notificaremos a nuestras familias inmediatamente.
COMUNICACIÓN CON LA ESCUELA
- De acuerdo con el instructivo de Aprendizaje a Distancia, pedimos que familias no hablen a la oficina de la escuela. Comunicación a través de correo electrónico es la mejor opción.

COLEGIATURA
Entendemos las circunstancias, pero les pedimos que también entiendan que mientras nos convertimos a una escuela de aprendizaje a distancia, nuestros maestros continuarán trabajando diariamente para asegurar que nuestros estudiantes estén recibiendo la mejor enseñanza posible. Cada una de nuestras escuelas siguen operando por sus propio presupuesto escolar y no estamos recibiendo ningún apoyo financiero del Departamento de Escuelas Católicas. Nuestras familias, a través de su colegiatura, apoyan el ministerio continuo de nuestra escuela. Por esa razón, la colegiatura seguirá igual durante este tiempo.

APRENDIZAJE A DISTANCIA
Es muy importante que como padres de familia, tomen tiempo para familiarizarme con las aplicaciones/plataformas que han sido establecidas por nuestros maestros. Nuestros esfuerzos solo serán eficaz con su ayuda para asegurar que sus estudiantes estén completando su trabajo.
TOMEN EN CUENTA:
- Por favor de comunicarse directamente con los maestros con cualquier preguntas académicas o logísticas.
- Cada maestro tiene su propio horario y aplicaciones/plataformas para aprendizaje a distancia.
- MIDDLE SCHOOL (6-8 grado): Ya tenemos tarea tarde e incompleta. También hay asistencia baja en las conferencias a través de ZOOM. Por favor de asegurarse que sus hijos estén completando sus responsabilidades.
- Maestros toman lista de asistencia.
- Maestros compartirán sus pólizas con entrega de tarea. Estamos al tanto de las circunstancias, pero por favor comuniquen con los maestros si hay una circunstancia especial que impida entregar las tareas a tiempo.
SIGUIENDO ADELANTE
- Mientras escribo esta carta, no hemos recibido noticias definitivas indicando cuanto tiempo estaremos cerrados. En cuanto esa información esté disponible, la compartiré con la comunidad escolar. Esto también vendrá con nuestro plan de largo plazo para aprendizaje a distancia.
Yo continuaré en constante comunicación con nuestra comunidad escolar. Por favor tengan confianza que nuestra prioridad es el éxito académico de nuestros estudiantes. Nosotros también tomamos en cuenta lo que trae esta situación a sus hogares y a su familia. Navegaremos juntos este tiempo difícil y saldremos una escuela aun mas fuerte.
Por favor sigan orando y mantengan la fe. Por cualquier razón, por favor comuníquese si necesitan ayuda o apoyo.
